The word "heavy duty" is used freely in product listings, but it means something specific in engineering terms. A heavy-duty steel bollard isn't just a bigger version of a standard one. It's a different product category with different design intent, different fixing requirements, and meaningfully different performance under vehicle impact.
What defines a heavy-duty bollard
The three variables that determine bollard performance under vehicle impact are wall thickness, outer diameter, and embedment depth or fixing specification.
Standard bollards typically run at 76mm OD with 3mm wall thickness. Heavy-duty products start at 114mm OD with 6.3mm wall, and go up to 168mm OD with 10mm wall for the highest-demand applications.
That difference in wall thickness isn't cosmetic. A 10mm-wall 168mm-OD bollard in a concrete-in installation has a section modulus several times higher than a standard product — it will absorb a vehicle strike and remain standing where a standard bollard would shear or deflect far enough to allow the vehicle through.
When heavy-duty specification is required
Not every site needs heavy-duty bollards. But some scenarios make the decision straightforward:
Vehicle perimeter control. Anywhere a vehicle could, if it failed to stop, cause serious injury or significant property damage beyond the bollard line — warehouse perimeters with pedestrian areas beyond them, car park exits adjacent to public footpaths, loading bay aprons near building structures.
High-speed risk environments. Roads, depot entry points, and site entrances where vehicles may arrive at speed. A standard bollard at a site entrance will slow a car. It will not stop a HGV or a loaded vehicle travelling at road speed. Specification needs to match the realistic worst-case scenario, not the expected one.
Security-critical perimeters. Commercial and industrial sites with high-value assets, critical infrastructure, or public-facing frontages where vehicle-as-weapon risk is a consideration.
Repeated low-speed impact environments. Loading bays, reversing areas, and tight access routes where bollards will be contacted regularly. In these environments, wall thickness determines longevity as much as it determines performance — thin-wall bollards require frequent replacement when they're in the path of regular minor impacts.

Finish options and their implications
Hot-dip galvanised is the correct finish for external heavy-duty bollards. The zinc coating thickness on a hot-dip product provides genuine long-term corrosion protection — a properly galvanised bollard in an exposed environment will not require painting or surface maintenance for years.
Powder-coated safety yellow is appropriate where visibility is a priority. The powder coat provides a bright, consistent finish but requires periodic inspection in impact environments — chips and scuffs allow corrosion to initiate beneath the coating.
Bare steel with a primer coat is not acceptable for external use regardless of how it's marketed.
Fixing: concrete-in vs bolt-down
For heavy-duty applications, concrete-in installation is generally preferable. The bollard is set into a drilled or cast hole to a minimum depth of 600mm (more for larger-diameter products) and backfilled with concrete. This distributes the load from a vehicle strike into the surrounding substrate rather than concentrating it at the anchor bolt positions.
Bolt-down heavy-duty bollards are available and appropriate where the substrate is a reinforced concrete slab of adequate thickness — minimum 150mm for most heavy-duty products. The fixing pattern and bolt specification matter: undersized anchor bolts on a heavy bollard do not give you heavy-duty performance.
Maintenance and inspection
A correctly installed heavy-duty bollard requires minimal ongoing maintenance. Annual inspection for surface corrosion, fixing integrity, and any signs of impact damage is good practice. A bollard that has taken a significant vehicle strike should be inspected before being returned to service — internal deformation can compromise subsequent performance even when external damage is minor.
